After 4 years we thought it would be a nice idea to dust the camping equipment off and give it a try again. It was decided that we would head for the UK South West area and visit the Somerset area. We traveled via Dunkerque to Dover and from there towards Bristol. Eventually we ended up on a small familiy camping called Netherdale south of Bristol.

The weather was typically British but that did not spoil our fun very much. We visited the helicopter museum near Westham-Super-Mare and naturally also the Haynes Motor museum in Sparkford. At the Fun Farm in Taunton we spent a great day where Rick could play around on a quad and Desmond was very brave by holding a snake and feeding an owl. A few kilomaters from our camping was Cheddar which is known for the typical English cheese. Although the village and the area was very nice, we didn't stay there very long due to the massive crowd of tourists and the high entry prices to the caves (where the cheese is stored).

So we did what we usually do on holiday: just get in the Fiat, drive around and enjoy the narrow roads and the tiny villages of the Somerset country side. Watchet is a small and romantic village and driving along the coast to Bridgwater revealed some breathtaking views. Also Glastonbury is a nice place to visit. Over the past decades this village has developed into a centre for all spiritual people that are sensible to medieval whichcraft, magicians etc. Very interesting!!

But eventually we ran out of luck and were hit by heavy rainshowers. On 2 different days we were just not able to leave the tent for 24hrs period! Have a look at the video at the bottom of the page. When we ran out of dry clothes we decided to break up a few days earlier than planned and return home. And guess what?? On the day we were packing the tent, the sun came through!! But we stuck to our plan and drove home in one trip. The Fiat covered the 750km trip without any problem and the total distance covered was about 2200km. Not bad for a 47 year old car isn't it???

Our plans for next year will probabely lead us to the more Southern regions of Europe ...............

The cliffs near Dover are truly white!!

Great name for Dutch visitors of this camping!

So far so good......

There even was a small playground for Desmond!

But at times Des was busy helping Astrid out!

Well I couldnt help.... I had my holidays.....

At the beach of Weston-Super-Mare.

And yes....shortly after this pic was taken, it started to rain.

During low tide the boats are lying just on the sand.

Who can resist a street name like this???

The museum was rubbish but the playground rocked!!

A real helicopter to play in!! GREAT!!

Love the colours of this one.

This one served in the DDR and later (after 1989) in the German Luftwaffe......

... hence the 2 logos ...truly unique!!

Rick especially liked the cokpit.

Ever seen MASH!?!?! Yep, this is the same type used in Vietnam.

What's visiting the UK without a picknick in the countryside?

Some people really have the strangest hobbies....

These actually were used for a trip on the country side.....

A nice view on Lake Blagdon.

Same lake now with a view on the Blagdon village church tower.

Just one of the many churches we saw on our trips.

A mystical view isn't it??

Desmond knew exactly where we were.

Desmond taking a break at a very quiet local.

And after that it was time for a quick lunch break.

The Somerset coast is rough so no golden sand and palm trees overhere.

On the hill on the background is a road leading to Bridwater... breathtakingly beautiful!

Do I see remains of a bunker in that hill??

Rough and very slippery.... so walking requires some caution.

Oh dear.... I've seen these before!

And yes.... rain again!!

LOTS OF RAIN!!!!

No worries...we've brought a whole library.

The Haynes Motor museum in Sparkford.

More than 400 classic cars....PARADISE!!

Among which some USA battle cruisers....

But Desmond liked to play with horn, lights, sirenes etc....

I've tried to swap the Fiat for the DB2 but it didn't work out..... bad luck!

There were also a lot of classic racers...GREAT!!

After visiting the museum Rick and Des went out racing themselves.

Oh no Rick is not too old to play ....

The hedges make driving pretty exciting...

The area around Cheddar ....

Can you spot Rick??

Nice area to take pictures.

Nice area also to break all your arms and legs.

The Fun Farm at Taunton is an absolute must-visit for kids!

The owner of the farm.

One of the Fun Farm locals.

Desmond was asked to help feed the owl.

Later Rick was also helping out with the owl.

BARRELRIDE!!!!

And no... also for this Rick was definitely not too old!

Going cross-country with this??? Not me!!

Rick was old enough though for the quad bike!

And he was pretty fast too!

But ok... who can resist playing with sand....

Feeding the sheep was chaotic fun.

Desmond was the hero of the day... A REAL SNAKE!!

Lizzards are beautifull to see.

OK... Rick had to have the bigger snake.

But Dessie had the young owl.

The pitch after we packed the tent... need I say more?!

During our trip back the summer came back.

But we had enough... time to go home.

One last view on the white cliffs of Dover.

On You Tube I'v uploaded a small video of this holiday. You can hear the terrible rain that tortured us for hours and kept us in the tent. Rick was kind enough to add subtitles etc.
