Our summer holiday led us to Scotland this year. With this trip a long cherished wish came true. Due to the nature of the Scottish climate we decided to leave the tent home and rent a cottage. Eventually we chose to stay just North of Oban in a nice, little village called Benderloch at the shore of Ardmucknish Bay. This is on the West side of Scotland in an area known as Argyll and Bute that offers unspoilt nature and outdoor fun for everyone.

We were warm welcomed by June Currie and her husband Willie at Hawthorne cottages and felt at home straight away. I sure can recommend a stay there to anyone visiting the area.

Oban is obvisously known for its distillery but also as the "gateway to the isles". By ferry it is quite easy to reach the islands as for instance Mull which is just a 45 minute trip. As we had taken Astrid's recently bought Jeep Wrangler we decided to make a lot of trips to see more of the area. Of the 1600km we drove in these 2 weeks, the majority was driven on narrow single lane roads trough the country side.

We visited Loch Ness and saw breathtakingly beautifull views across Urquhart Castle. While driving up to Loch Etive we spotted deer in the woods..... absolutely stunning to see. I could continue for hours talking about this fabulous holiday but just see for yourself. The pics below show more than I could ever describe ..........

Connel bridge just South of Benderloch.

Benderloch lies between Oban and Fort William.

The entry to Hawthorn cottages.

Our cottage quietly located.

Typical sky over Scotland.

Typical local population.....

... this one lived next to our cottage.

We stopped numerous times to admire the views.

Stalker Castle is situated on a very small island.

Looking for shells etc on the beach.

After a days hard work.

Desmond being very brave.

Astrid didn't like it though.....

Don't know these but there were numerous on the rocks.

And this is how they look on the inside.

Just look at the shape of these rocks!

Time for a rest.

Nature is fantastic in Scotland.

Perfect environment for our Jeep.

A car that fits Astrid reather well.

One of the trips we made to Bonawe.

A bit of fun for Rick with rally carts.

Just like the real thing.

We visited a rare breeds farm with lots of different animals.

Nature calls.....

Don't know anything about birds but this one looked quite nice.

Just beauty and grace.

How are these called in English??

Real life Bambi was very friendly.

Astrid could not get enough.

Anothe one just being very friendly.

Dunstaffnage Castle just North of Oban.

Search for Rick and Desmond.

These old castles make you feel small and humble.

Standing there for centuries.

Impressive nature around the castle....

..... it doesn't stop to amaze me.

Yest it's rather wet in Scotland...why?

On tour at the beach..

Yes it had been raining ... a bit.

Urquhart Castle......

... and a view over Loch Ness.

We could not spot the real Nessie.

... so we settled for the info centre.

Just along the road somewhere.

Impressive waterfalls.

Desmond enjoyed himself.

Coffee break beside our cottage.

A world of its own.

The road to Loch Etive... 12 miles of beauty.

Very narrow though.....

...... and quite twisty.

But hey... look! A deer in the wild!

I just love these views.

But Desmond was more interested in Vicky the Pirate on the ferry from Newcastle to IJmuiden.
