![]() The holiday to my birthgrounds Mecklenburg Vorpommern in Germany knew some highs and lows. The start was delayed by 2 days due to a faulty clutch and replacement of the complete clutch assembly. But after a smooth 650km trip and a stronger growing sun we were quite confident that this holiday would turn out quite nicely. The North East region of Germany is well worth visiting. In Wismar we could admire quite a few replicas of ol sailing ships during a maritime festival. In Schwerin we took a walk around the recently restored palace and enjoyed a nice icecream in the magnificent garden with all its nice fountains and statues. On the island of Poel we discovered an old burnt down gasstation which we used as a stop for a nice picnic. There are also numerous nice little villages near the Baltic coast worth visiting, not in the last place Heiligendamm where the impact of the 2007 topconference G8 still can be found. Our nicest day however we spent at the Technik Musuem in Pütnitz, where a club of just 40 people is trying to save as much of the old East European vehicles as they can. There are loads of tanks, rocket launchers, trucks and other specific army vehicles aswell as helicopters and MIG jetfighters. Rick has had his share of fun with a quad while I took my chance and tried to drive a huge Russian 6-wheel drive truck across the country side. What an incredible monster this was. Nice detail of this
site was that it was built during the '30's as an military airport for the
Germans army. Lots of German pilots have been trained here before they were
sent out to bomb the hell out of London........ After the war it was used by
the Russians to accomodate 15.000 soldiers. The remains of this history can
be found anywhere. There are several dozen of old buildings that served as
offices, sleeping quarters, schools, gyms and bunkers. Also pay attention to
the architecture of the huge hangars with the one-piece concrete bows......
very beautifull! Our landlord had some strange hobbies as we found out. He had a cooling cell and then a second room which he used to take wild pigs and sweet bambis apart. Desmond found it very interesting but still a bit scary though. Astrid just could not bear the site of the dead deer in the cooling cell. One day I had planned to sort out some things with the Jeep together with Thomas. This mainly had to do with the wndscreen that was not able to keep the rain out. So we took out the wind screen, cleaned everything and reassembled the lot. Unfortunately Thomas pushied a little too hard and before he knew it, the screen had a big crack. Other than that the Jeep performed very reliable although it's drinking habits were somewhat worrying. Only on the way back home one of the mounting rails of the soft top that was attached on the windscreen frame turned loose at 130km/h. Scary moment as I expected the soft top to fly off any moment...........
